Become a Certified Chinese Calligraphy Instructor

The brush has a way of finding the right people. If you have felt what Shufa can do — the stillness it brings, the culture it carries — you already understand why others need to feel it too. The Shufa Foundation offers two certification pathways to help you share that gift with the world.

Two Certification Pathways

Where Will Shufa Take You?

Let’s walk this path together.

Your path as a Shufa instructor begins with a simple question: where are you in your practice, and what kind of teaching calls to you? Both certifications are grounded in the same philosophy — slow, intentional, culturally rooted — and both open doors that stay open for life.

Advanced Path

Shufa Ambassador

VIP Club Lead Certification Classics & Technique · Levels 4–7

The Ambassador is a guide for the long journey. You will lead the VIP Club — our exclusive Thematic Rotation Curriculum — where participants move through carefully sequenced stages of artistic growth, building confidence, style, and a relationship with the brush that lasts a lifetime.

This path is for those who have gone deep into the practice and feel called to shepherd others toward that same depth.

  • Advanced technique across multiple classical script styles
  • Exclusive access to the Shufa Thematic Rotation Curriculum
  • Long-arc student development and teaching strategy
  • Lead ongoing VIP Club cohorts
  • Mentorship from Teresa and the senior Shufa team
  • Membership in a growing global network of Shufa Ambassadors

A Framework Built to Last

10 Levels. One Shared Language.

The Shufa Foundation uses a 10-level framework — Beginner (1–3), Intermediate (4–7), and Advanced (8–10) — to describe the arc of Shufa practice. These levels are a shared language, not a formal exam. Both instructor programs develop primarily within the Intermediate range, with Facilitators emphasising mindful delivery and body-mind-eye alignment, and Ambassadors focusing on Shufa classics and technique depth.

Beginner Levels 1–3 Building core Shufa brushwork and personal practice — the foundation for both instructor paths
Intermediate Levels 4–7 Where both instructor programs develop: Facilitators focus on mindful delivery and body-mind-eye alignment; Ambassadors go deeper into Shufa classics and technique
Advanced Levels 8–10 Artist level — for practitioners committed to deep mastery of Shufa as an art form

Before You Apply

Common Questions

Do I need to be an advanced practitioner to apply for the Facilitator program? +
No. The Facilitator path is designed for practitioners who have a genuine feel for Shufa and a desire to share it — not those with the highest technical skill. What matters most is body-mind-eye connection and the ability to create a warm, grounding experience. If you’ve been practising and people keep asking you to teach them, you’re probably ready.
I’m not based in Vancouver. Can I do the program online? +
Yes. The Facilitator program runs fully online with recorded lessons and scheduled live sessions. Online-certified Facilitators are eligible for the same practicum support and workshop referrals through Calligraphy Zen and Shufa Foundation partner programs.
How does the practicum work — do I have to find my own students? +
We help. Practicum placements can be arranged through Shufa Foundation community programs and partner events. Certified Facilitators are also eligible for curated referrals through Calligraphy Zen and Shufa Foundation — so there is a real pathway to paid teaching from day one.
I’m not sure if I’m a Facilitator or an Ambassador. How do I decide? +
The free 20-minute consultation is designed exactly for this. As a general guide: if you’re drawn to sharing Shufa as a mindful, accessible experience for beginners, the Facilitator path is for you. If you’re deeper into the classical practice and feel called to lead an ongoing learning community, the Ambassador path may be calling — though Facilitator certification is recommended first.
What if I miss the June 1 deadline? +
Applications for the June cohort close June 1. If you miss this window, book a free consultation and we’ll talk about the next available cohort or whether a self-paced arrangement could work for you.
