Picture a quiet gallery in the middle of a community centre. Tall hanging scrolls, a single bold circle of black ink, and a table of brushes, ink and paper waiting to be picked up. That is Journey into Shufa, a free Chinese calligraphy exhibition at the Clayton Community Centre in Surrey, running October 1 to November 18, 2026.
What is Shufa (書法)?
Shufa means “the methodology of writing”, and it is regarded as the most prestigious form of art in Chinese culture. The brushstrokes, together with the space and flow they create, reflect how we see the world. They also show our inner state in the present moment, through the synchronicity between the rhythm of our heart and the expression of the brush.
A practice for a whole lifetime
Shufa is something you can spend your entire life exploring. It takes years to bring your focus, energy and intention into each stroke, yet the process of practicing is itself a wonderful tool. It evokes self awareness and a natural flow state, helping us stay emotionally regulated and creative in our daily lives.
Calligraphy for everyone
At Shufa Foundation, we genuinely believe Shufa is for everyone, even if you have no background in Chinese or calligraphy. But you would miss so much if you only listened to us or looked at a finished piece on the wall. The real benefits of Shufa can only be experienced by picking up a brush and going through the learning process yourself.
